Russia's first two universal helicopter carriers (UDC) will be laid down at Crimea's Zaliv shipyard in May 2020, a source in the shipbuilding industry told TASS.

"These two UDCs have a submerged displacement of up to 15,000 tons. This is the first time in history that Russia has ordered the production of UDCs at the Zaliv shipyard in Kerch, Crimea in 2020," the source said.

The first ship is planned to be handed over to the Russian naval fleet by the end of 2027, before the completion of the state military armament program.

These helicopter carriers are capable of carrying a large number of heavy helicopters for various purposes (up to 16). In addition, the UDC also has a berth for other vessels, or transporting armored vehicles.

The inter-agency agencies also said that the development of technical projects for new-generation aircraft carriers is in the final stages. After completion, in the next few months, the contract for the production of UDC will be signed.

Previously, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the strategies and techniques for the first Russian amphibious aircraft carriers will be completed before the end of 2019. Accordingly, the first aircraft carriers will be delivered starting from 2027, and continuing until 2030.

The Zaliv plant in Kerch, Crimea has a shipbuilding slipway up to 300 meters long and 50 meters wide, allowing the construction of ships with a displacement of more than 150,000 tons./.
