Venezuelan National Assembly President Juan Guaido declared himself head of state on January 23 for the duration of the interim government. The United States announced its recognition of Guaido and demanded that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom Washington considers illegitimately elected, not allow violence against the opposition.
Maduro calls himself president as required by the constitution, and he calls the head of the opposition congress a puppet of the United States.
Russia, China and several other countries support Nicolas Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
