According to Xinhua News Agency, Russian Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov said on December 29 that the country's military will focus on developing its strategic nuclear forces by 2015, as Moscow continues to enhance its combat capabilities.

Speaking to a Russian television channel, Gerasimov emphasized: "Developing strategic nuclear forces is a top priority."

In addition, according to Gerasimov, three regiments of the Strategic Missile Forces have been re-equipped with the new Yars intercontinental ballistic missile system, while four Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers were upgraded and put into service in 2014.

Gerasimov added that two advanced radar systems have been deployed in Kaliningrad and Irkutsk, and two more have undergone trial operation in Barnaul and Yeniseisk this year and are expected to be officially put into active service next year.

The Tass news agency quoted Gerasimov as saying that the combat capabilities of the Russian army have increased 1.3 times.
