The annual Foal Eagle and Key Resolve exercises, among the world's largest, between the US and South Korean militaries began on April 1 and were expected to last until the end of the month or longer, but have now been scaled back, apparently to ease tensions with North Korea.
The scaling back of the exercises appears to have been South Korean President Moon Jae-in's idea.
He once claimed to have persuaded Washington to postpone the exercises until after the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, which took place in February this year.
In return, North Korea could halt missile launches and other provocative activities.
