Russia tests twice as powerful version of Pantsir-S1

This information was personally announced by the head of the Rosteh State Corporation, Sergei Chemezov: "We plan to conduct tests of the modernized missile until the end of the fourth quarter of this year. We do not disclose its characteristics. I note that it will exceed the characteristics of the old missile in a number of parameters."

Although all parameters of the Pantsir-S1M version are still kept secret by Russia, according to a previously revealed Moscow military source, the Pantsir-S1M version will have significantly improved long-range detection and attack capabilities compared to its predecessor systems, thanks to a new phased array radar with an effective operating range of 75km (the old radar is 40km).

Similar to the Pantsir-S2, the Pantsir-S1M is expected to be equipped with a 2D rotating array radar. In addition, the Pantsir-S1M can destroy targets at an expected range of 40km, double that of the previous version. This capability also means that the system will use a new, larger missile than before.

The components of the new air defense system are still undergoing final preparations for testing. Mr. Popov said that Pantsir-S1M will probably be mounted on the chassis of the new KAMAZ 8x8 truck, and one of its versions will be mounted on a tracked chassis.

Along with developing the new version Pantsir-S1M, Russia has also successfully tested the Pantsir-SM version - a weapon that is considered capable of destroying both the US F-35 stealth fighter and ballistic missiles.

"The newly developed multifunctional targeting system combined with an active array radar will double the effective range of the Pantsir-SM compared to the previous version," said Alexander Khomyakov, chief engineer of the Scientific Design Bureau of Weapons at Rostec.

The Pantsir-SM's combat capabilities surpass the Pantsir-S1 in terms of range. According to the Russian manufacturer, the Pantsir-SM system (also known as Armour-SM) can also intercept ballistic missiles.

RIA Novosti quoted General Director of the High-Precision Complex Aleksandr Denisov as saying: "This complex allows destroying airborne attack vehicles flying at a speed of several thousand meters per second. Currently, as you know, this speed is 1,000 m/s. Its most important advantage over the existing Pantsir system will be the ability to intercept ballistic targets."

This representative added that once both Pantsir-SM and Pantsir-S1M systems complete testing and enter service, these weapons, along with the S-300/400 and soon the S-500, will strengthen Russia's air defenses to be able to intercept any air attacks from outside.
