Russia equips Antei nuclear submarines with Kalibr missiles

The Antei nuclear submarines of project 949A, undergoing deep modernization at the Zvezda plant in the Far East, will be equipped with the Kalibr missile system.

RIA Novosti news agency on March 7 quoted Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov as saying the above information.

Earlier, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the prospect of high-precision lethal weapons, including the Kalibr missile complex, becoming the basic driving force to restrain the enemy at sea.

“At the Zvezda plant, a deep modernization of project 949A nuclear submarines is underway, including replacing the armament with the Kalibr missile complex, as well as navigation, life support systems and other equipment,” Russian Deputy Defense Minister Borisov stressed.

The Antei nuclear submarines of Project 949A have a displacement of 24,000 tons, a length of 154 m, a width of more than 18 meters, are capable of developing an underwater speed of 32 knots and diving to a depth of 600 meters.

The basic function of the submarine is to destroy enemy aircraft carriers. The Antei submarine is equipped with Granit cruise missiles, as well as 6 torpedo launchers.

The Kalibr missile was developed by the Novator OKB in Yekaterinburg, part of the Almaz-Antei Air Defense Concern. It is a family of missiles with several variants for the Russian military and foreign customers.

Kalibr has a full range of variants for the Russian Army (Kalibr-M) and Air Force (Kalibr-A), but these missiles are most widely deployed in the Russian Navy.
