The Russian Foreign Ministry statement said the German government's decision "further undermines relations between the two countries." However, Russia did not specify the number of German diplomats who would be expelled this time.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has stressed that it will significantly reduce the maximum number of staff working at the German diplomatic mission in Russia. According to the ministry, the German Ambassador to Russia was informed of the decision on April 5.
Immediately after the Russian announcement, the German Foreign Ministry confirmed that there had been discussions with Moscow in recent weeks about the number of diplomatic staff of each country.
In late March, German magazine Focus cited sources in the German Foreign Ministry as saying that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had planned to expel more than 30 Russian diplomats in Berlin. However, a German Foreign Ministry spokesperson later did not confirm this information.
