Russian armed forces and advisers will support the Syrian armed forces in the fight against terrorism in Idlib.

Russia has announced that it will continue its fight against terrorism in Syria's Idlib province alongside the government of President Bashar al-Assad, despite the move being inconsistent with Washington's vision of resolving the crisis in the region.

Speaking at a press conference on February 17, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian armed forces and advisers will “support the Syrian armed forces in the fight against terrorism.” Noting the escalating terrorist attacks in Idlib province, northwest Syria, Dmitry Peskov said that “the Russian government regrets that terrorists have revived in Idlib.”

The statement came after a recent phone call between President Donald Trump and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, in which Trump “expressed concern about the violence in Idlib.” The US leader also praised “Turkey’s efforts to prevent a humanitarian crisis” in the province and expressed hope that Russia would stop supporting President Assad’s government, White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere said.

The conflict in the Idlib de-escalation zone has been steadily escalating in recent weeks. Earlier on February 3, a Turkish armed convoy was hit by artillery fire, killing five people. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the incident occurred while the Syrian army was conducting an operation against terrorists in the area and they were not informed of the movement of the convoy. Türkiye then attacked Syrian army positions and deployed additional troops to the de-escalation zone 10 days later. In response to Ankara, Syria condemned and recognized the Ottoman Empire's genocide against the Armenians./.
