(Baonghean.vn) - Russia has announced a major breakthrough in electronic weapons technology that could help President Vladimir Putin's armed forces "shoot down" foreign military satellites and "neutralize" the enemy's modern weapons.

According to Moscow, the new weapons system is capable of "neutralizing" the guidance systems of Western cruise missiles and precision weapons.

Russian officials claim that this is a “new electronic warfare weapons system” that can be attached to other devices on land, in the air, and at sea.

Yuri Mayevsky, deputy director of the Radio-Electronic Technologies Company (KRET), Russia's largest electronic component manufacturer, said: "This system will target long-range strategic and tactical aircraft, enemy electronic means, and prevent radio-electronic equipment from foreign military satellites."

He added that the new weapon would not operate based on satellites because this would be against international law.

Russia announced the superweapon amid its worst relations with the West since the collapse of the Soviet Union, alongside the threat of a new Cold War.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has invested heavily in building a strong military for the country. The creation of this superweapon is the latest step demonstrating Russia's efforts to bridge its strategic military gap with Europe.
