Russia and the US may no longer have the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty
(Baonghean.vn) - On August 15, Mr. Gustavo Zlauvinen - Chairman of the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) said that Russia and the US could lose the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) in 2026 if the situation of no high-level contacts continues.
"If the current situation we are facing continues, when there are no contacts at the highest level between Moscow and Washington, then yes, we could face such a situation," Zlauvinen said.

However, he expressed hope that this would not happen. Mr. Zlauvinen added that the termination of the agreement between the Russian Federation and the United States as well as the abandonment of limits on strategic offensive weapons could lead to a new arms race.
The START-3 treaty, the only nuclear arms control regime between the US and Russia, has been extended for five years and is due to expire in 2026. Russia and the US began discussing the details of a future treaty on limiting nuclear weapons, but then stopped talking after Russia began special military operations in Ukraine.
Referring to the North Korean issue, Mr. Zlauvinen warned that Pyongyang's nuclear weapons testing could have negative impacts on the region and encourage other countries to pursue their own weapons./.
