Martin Schulz and EU leaders have asked British Prime Minister David Cameron to begin the Brexit negotiations. |
Mr. Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, said that he wants Britain to officially begin negotiations to formally withdraw from the EU as early as tomorrow because he is concerned that Cameron's delaying tactics will harm the British economy.
Mr Schulz is not the only foreign politician to offer this road map to Britain. French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has also urged Mr Cameron to negotiate an exit from the EU as soon as possible.
“Simple hesitation is a tactic of the British Conservative Party, but it is causing pain to everyone. That is why we hope the British government will quickly start negotiations. The summit on Tuesday is the right time,” he said.
Prolonged instability would increase unemployment due to turmoil in financial markets, Mr. Schulz added.
At a meeting of leaders of the European Union's founding nations in Germany yesterday, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged Britain to act quickly and trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - the formal legal process by which Britain would negotiate the terms of its withdrawal from the EU.
“We hope that this process starts as soon as possible so that there will not be a prolonged limbo and that we can focus on the future and the work that Europe has to do,” he said.
All six ministers at yesterday's meeting also stressed in a joint statement: "We expect the UK Government to make clear that the UK's decision to leave the EU takes effect as soon as possible."

EC President Jean-Claude Juncker says Brexit is not an “amicable divorce”. |
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker also asked Mr Cameroon to do so quickly in a speech on Friday, saying bluntly: “I don’t understand why the British government needs months to decide on the ‘divorce’ request. I want it immediately.”
French President Francois Hollande added: “It will be very painful for Britain but, like all divorces, it will be even more painful for those left behind.”
Only German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that there was no fever: “It is true, we should not waste time. But we will certainly have to fight it for a long time”./.
