(Baonghean.vn) - After robbing two Chinese people with his accomplices, Thi immediately fled. After nearly 3 years on the run, Thi turned himself in and was sentenced to prison.

On November 18, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a trial of defendant Nguyen Thinh Thi (born 1995), residing in Ngoc Son commune, Thanh Chuong district, for the crime of "Robbery".

Around September 2019, Thi was working in Hanoi when his friend Nguyen Dang Hao (born in 1991, residing in Ngoc Son commune) invited him to Nghe An to rob foreigners.

Hao had the idea of robbing property because he lost a football bet and borrowed money from his cousin, Tran Thi Tan (born in 1981, residing in Vo Liet commune, Thanh Chuong district) but was unsuccessful.

Therefore, when he learned that Tan was about to take two Chinese people to Vietnam to buy buffalo, cows, and wood to sell for profit, Hao had the idea of robbing them. Knowing his cousin's intention, Tan refused, but after hearing Hao say "let me take care of everything", he did not say anything.

After having the identification of the two foreigners, Hao and Thi took a bus to Nghe An, waiting in the area near the People's Committee of Ngoc Son commune, Thanh Chuong district to rob money.

At around 2:00 a.m. on September 27, 2019, when Tan and two Chinese people had just gotten off the bus, a stranger suddenly rushed in, hit them in the head, sprayed pepper spray in their faces, robbed them of 57,000 yuan (equivalent to 182 million VND) and then fled.

According to the plan, Tan brought two Chinese people to the police station to report the incident, pretending to have been robbed. However, Tan's inconsistent statements did not fool the police.

Knowing that he could not deny his crime, Tan bowed his head and admitted his guilt, and at the same time contacted his cousin and Thi to ask them to surrender. However, because Hao and Thi escaped, the investigation agency issued a wanted order. Tran Thi Tan was later sentenced to 5 years in prison for "Robbery".

As for Thi, after more than 3 years on the run, he turned himself in in July 2022, admitting his crime.

At the trial, the defendant admitted to the crime and said Hao gave him 50 million VND. However, Thi said he later asked his wife to transfer the money to Hao to pay back the victim. Regarding the act of evading arrest, the defendant said he “ran away because he was afraid of going to jail.”
