Nghe An: 3 preschool children hospitalized after eating toilet powder

(Baonghean.vn) - While the teacher was out, a 4-year-old child opened a package of toilet cleaner powder and shared it with 2 classmates, causing all 3 children to be hospitalized.

The incident occurred at around 4:00 p.m. on November 14 at the main point of Manh San, Nam Kim Kindergarten (Nam Kim Commune, Nam Dan District). The three 4-year-old children who accidentally ate toilet powder were: Nguyen Thi Yen Nhi, Nguyen Ngoc Bich and Pham Thai Nguyen.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Van - Principal of Nam Kim Kindergarten said: At that time, the toilet in the classroom was clogged, the accountant took 2 packs of toilet cleaner powder and brought them to the classroom. When the teacher received them, a child wanted to go to the toilet, she immediately put the powder in the cupboard and took the child out.

At that time, in the classroom, a curious child opened the cupboard, took out a packet of toilet cleaner powder, opened it and gave it to two classmates to eat. When the teacher entered the classroom and discovered the incident, she reported it to the Board of Directors and took the children to the Nam Kim Commune Health Station for first aid.

The school then informed the families to take the children to Duc Tho District General Hospital (Ha Tinh). Yen Nhi and Bich Ngoc were then taken to Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for emergency treatment. After initial first aid, on the morning of November 15, Yen Nhi and Ngoc Bich were transferred to the National Children's Hospital.

At noon on November 15, Thai Nguyen was also taken to Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital for emergency treatment by his family, the school's Board of Directors, and leaders of Nam Kim Commune People's Committee. He is currently being cared for there.

Speaking over the phone, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan (father of Nguyen Ngoc Bich) said: The health of the two children has passed the dangerous stage. Ngoc Bich has blisters and ulcers on her tongue and can eat a little. Yen Nhi has ulcers in her throat. The two children have just been ordered to have an X-ray, a cardiovascular check-up and are preparing for an endoscopy to take samples for testing.

"This is an unwanted incident, it was just an accident. After the incident, the school and the commune People's Committee leaders were responsible for taking the children to the hospital for emergency treatment. The teacher also wanted to take the child to the National Children's Hospital with the family, but the family only needed to go," said Mr. Thuan.

Regarding the above incident, Mr. Trinh Xuan Hung - Chairman of Nam Kim Commune People's Committee (Nam Dan) said that this was an unexpected incident and the commune and the school are working with the family to support the best conditions for health care for the children.

It is known that Nam Kim Kindergarten has about 460 children studying at 3 locations. Of which, Manh San is the main location with 11 classes and nearly 400 children studying. Regarding the responsibility of the school and teachers, Ms. Nguyen Thi Van - Principal of the school said that the school will hold a meeting and draw profound lessons to prevent similar unfortunate incidents from happening again.
