Nghe An: Four suspects arrested for taking advantage of people fleeing floods to steal property.
Taking advantage of the heavy rains and rising river levels that forced people to evacuate, Nguyen Viet Phuong, along with his two younger brothers and a cousin, targeted houses with valuable possessions to steal from.
On October 11th, the Tan Phu Commune Police in Nghe An Province announced the arrest of a group of four individuals who took advantage of the storm and flooding in the area to steal property from local residents.
Accordingly, at approximately 10:00 AM on October 9th, the Tan Phu Commune Police received a report from a resident of Thuan Yen hamlet regarding an incident involving their family.Many items were stolen.It is of great value during evacuations due to storms.
Despite being focused on helping people recover from the damage caused by the storm, the Tan Phu Commune Police quickly launched an investigation into this serious incident that disrupted security and order in the area.
Less than 24 hours after receiving the report, at 6:00 AM on October 10th, the Tan Phu Commune Police arrested a group of four individuals involved in theft: Nguyen Viet Son (born 1998), Nguyen Viet Phuong (born 1995), Nguyen Viet Manh (born 2007), all residing in Tan Phu Commune, and Nguyen Hong Hung (born 1995) residing in Nghia Dong Commune. Of the four arrested individuals, Son, Phuong, and Manh are brothers from the same family.
At the police station, the suspects confessed that, taking advantage of the stormy weather and rising river levels, which forced people to flee the floods and left their houses and farms unattended, Phuong proactively discussed and persuaded his two younger brothers, Son and Manh, along with their cousin, Hung, to prepare bolt cutters and use two boats to search for houses with valuable property to steal. After stealing, the suspects took the property to another commune to hide it in order to evade the police.
Items seized included: 2 boats, 2 air conditioners, 2 refrigerators, 1 combine harvester, and other assets with a total value exceeding 100 million VND.
The Tan Phu commune police are currently handling the case according to the law.
