Nghe An: Arrested a group specializing in hacking Facebook, defrauding tens of billions of dong

(Baonghean.vn) - Initial investigation determined that the group of young men led by Tien had taken over more than 500 Facebook accounts to defraud tens of billions of dong.

On the morning of April 27, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Huu Cuong - Deputy Head of Vinh City Police (Nghe An), said that this unit is temporarily detaining Nguyen Huu Tien (24 years old, Ward 2, Quang Tri town), along with 12 other suspects to clarify the act of online fraud.

All 13 young men being detained are from the same hometown of Quang Tri, with Tien being the alleged ringleader. The entire group was arrested in Da Nang City.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Cuong, this group has been operating professionally for many years. In 2018 alone, Vinh City Police received 50 reports related to fraud through this method.

“The group’s method is to hack Facebook, steal passwords, and then text the account owner’s relatives and friends to ask to borrow money. Through initial investigation, we determined that there were about 500 Facebook accounts that were victims. Each scam they took from them cost an average of 50-100 million VND, but there were also some cases where it was more than 300 million VND,” said Lieutenant Colonel Cuong, adding that the initial investigation agency determined that this group had taken tens of billions of VND after a long period of operation.

During the arrest, the investigation agency seized 750 million VND and many bank accounts of Tien. In addition, the detectives also seized 8 pink pills.
