Nghe An, along with the rest of the country, is mobilizing all its resources to eliminate malaria.
For World Malaria Day 2025, Vietnam has chosen the theme "Total Effort to Eliminate Malaria: Increased Investment; Innovation; Determined Action". Nghe An province is determined to join the rest of the country in successfully fulfilling this task.
On April 25th, in Vinh City, the National Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology (Ministry of Health) organized a rally to commemorate World Malaria Day 2025 and a conference on mobilizing resources for malaria prevention, control, and elimination in Vietnam.
Attending the rally and conference were Dr. Hoang Dinh Canh - Director of the Central Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology; representatives from departments and divisions of the Ministry of Health; representatives from international organizations in Vietnam; and leaders of the Departments of Health of 26 provinces nationwide.
Representing the Nghe An Department of Health were Dr. Le Thi Hoai Chung – Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Director of the Department of Health; and Pharmacist Tran Minh Tue – Deputy Director of the Department of Health.
World Malaria Day (April 25) was adopted by the 60th session of the World Health Assembly in May 2007, designating it as a day to recognize global efforts to effectively control malaria. The aim of this event is to raise global awareness of malaria – a dangerous infectious disease that causes millions of deaths each year, particularly in low-income countries.

Since 2007, World Malaria Day has become an occasion for the international community to focus resources, launch communication campaigns, and take concrete actions to control and ultimately eliminate malaria in high-risk countries. For World Malaria Day 2025, Vietnam has chosen the theme "Total Effort to Eliminate Malaria: Increased Investment; Innovation; Determined Action".
Speaking at the rally, Dr. Hoang Dinh Canh, Director of the Central Institute of Malaria, Parasitology, and Entomology, stated: In recent years, Vietnam has made significant progress in controlling malaria. 48 provinces nationwide have been recognized as malaria-free.
Vietnam has achieved the goals set out in the National Strategy for Malaria Prevention and Elimination in Vietnam for the period 2011-2020 and orientation to 2030, which are: controlling the malaria incidence rate to < 0.15/1,000 people; the malaria mortality rate to < 0.02/100,000 people by 2020 and eliminating malaria by 2030.
In the first four months of 2025, only 24 cases of malaria parasite infection were detected nationwide, of which 18 were imported cases (accounting for 75%), a decrease of nearly 82% compared to the same period in 2024.
Dr. Hoang Dinh Canh suggested that all levels, sectors, and localities need to increase investment in the system.medicalInvesting in scientific research, applying advanced technologies and innovative models, and strengthening action and coordination with community participation are crucial for preventing, eliminating, and preventing the resurgence of malaria.
Speaking in response to World Malaria Day, the Director of the Department of HealthNghe AnLe Thi Hoai Chung stated: Nghe An was recognized as having eliminated malaria in 2022. However, the province still experiences the influx of exotic malaria parasites from workers returning from malaria-endemic areas.
In the coming period, Nghe An will continue to effectively implement key solutions to prevent and eliminate malaria, namely: increasing investment and proactively allocating resources for malaria prevention and control; improving epidemiological surveillance capacity; maintaining readiness to respond to epidemic situations; innovating thinking and being flexible in health communication and education; promoting the application of information technology in epidemic prevention and control; and mobilizing the participation of all levels, sectors, and the entire population to work together in malaria prevention and control.

Following the rally, a conference to mobilize resources for malaria prevention, control, and elimination in Vietnam was held with the participation of 90 delegates, including leaders of departments and bureaus of the Ministry of Health, specialized institutes on malaria prevention and control; representatives of international organizations and social organizations supporting malaria prevention and control in Vietnam; and representatives of provincial Departments of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This conference is organized annually by the Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology, with financial support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria through the "Regional Initiative to Prevent and Eliminate Artemisinin-Resistant Malaria" project, 2024-2026.
