Nghe An: Actual assessment of new rice variety can reach over 81 quintals/ha

(Baonghean.vn) – On May 16, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Nghe An Agricultural Materials Joint Stock Corporation jointly organized a workshop to evaluate the productivity and quality of NA6 rice variety of Nghe An Agricultural Materials Joint Stock Corporation; and introduce the new fragrant sticky rice variety 612.

Delegates attending the workshop visited the rice fields growing VTNA6 variety in Nghi Van commune, Nghi Loc district; the seed production farm of VTNN Corporation in Kim Lien commune, Nam Dan.

The VT-NA6 rice variety was selected from a hybrid combination created by the South Central Coast Agricultural Science and Technology Institute with the original name AN1. The copyright was transferred to Nghe An Agricultural Materials Joint Stock Corporation since 2014 for further testing and trial production, as a basis for submitting to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for official recognition before mass production and being changed to the official name VT-NA6.

This is a purebred rice variety with a short growing season (125-128 days) in the spring crop. The actual yield of the VT-NA6 rice variety reaches 81.66 tons/ha in the winter-spring crop.

The rice variety is suitable for the late spring crop and also for the intensive summer-autumn crop, and the flooded summer-autumn crop; the yield is equal to or higher than many other hybrid rice varieties such as Nhi Uu 986, Thai Xuyen 111, Khai Phong 1; has wide adaptability; good resistance to pests and diseases, especially blast disease; delicious rice quality.

Started to be selected and developed since 2008 by the Center for Technology Transfer and Agricultural Extension, Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Nép Thơm N612 is a new short-term, high-quality, fragrant glutinous rice variety with a clear origin. The growth period is from 130-135 days in the Spring crop and 105-110 days in the Summer crop; good growth and development ability, high purity; less susceptible to blast and leaf blight, good resistance to brown planthoppers, slightly susceptible to brown planthopper; better lodging resistance than BM960 and N97 glutinous rice. The average yield is 55 quintals/ha in the Summer crop and 60-65 quintals/ha in the Spring crop.

The workshop unanimously proposed the Science and Technology Council of the Department of Crop Production - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to consider and approve the special recognition of new plant variety products for the VT-NA6 rice variety for rapid development into production; allow trial production of the N612 glutinous rice variety in the Northern provinces, in the late Spring and early Season on flat and slightly low-lying fields. Suggest that localities test and develop and expand the production of the N612 rice variety to increase the efficiency of agricultural production.
