(Baonghean.vn) - For nearly a month now, the price of live pigs has dropped sharply, fluctuating only at 62,000 - 65,000 VND/kg. However, the price of meat at traditional markets remains high, only decreasing by 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg of finished meat.

At the beginning of the year, the price of live pigs was at 83,000 - 85,000 VND/kg. However, since the beginning of May, the price of live pigs has continuously decreased. Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - Director of a livestock company in Hop Thanh (Yen Thanh) said: "Currently, the selling price of live pigs at the farm to traders is 65,000 VND/kg for beautiful pigs with high walls; while the price of grade 2 pigs is only 62,000 VND/kg".

Not just farm pigs, pig priceof small-scale livestock households in the people is only at 63,000 - 67,000 VND/kg. This is considered the lowest price in the past 2 years. Having just sold 5 pigs weighing from 50 - 55kg for 63,000 VND/kg, Mr. Tran Huu Dac, Lien Minh hamlet (Thanh Lien commune, Thanh Chuong) said: "The price of live pigs is low, the price of animal feed is increasing, so even though the weight is not enough to sell, we decided to sell. In early May 2021, selling 2 pigs was at 68,000 VND/kg, now it is only 63,000 VND".

Pork prices in traditional markets have barely decreased, consumers still have to buy meat at high prices despite the sharp drop in live pig prices. Photo: Thanh Phuc

Although the price of live pigs has plummeted,Finished meat prices remain high, people still have to buy pork at high prices. Specifically, the price of pork at traditional markets in Vinh city ranges from 140,000 - 170,000 VND/kg; the price of pork at rural markets ranges from 125,000 - 150,000 VND/kg.

Ms. Quach Thi Nhieu, owner of a pork stall at Dinh market (Do Luong) said: “We buy meat from high-priced slaughterhouses, so we have to sell it at a high price to make a profit. In fact, the finished meat has only decreased by 5,000 - 15,000 VND/kg compared to before. Currently, the price of meat imported from slaughterhouses is from 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, so the retail price is still from 130,000 - 150,000 VND/kg.”

According to traders, to reach consumers, pork must go through many intermediaries, from farmers, traders, transporters, slaughterhouses, and traders to import goods before reaching buyers, the cost of each stage increases by an average of about 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg. Therefore, consumers still have tobuy pork at high priceMs. Nguyen Tu Nhi, a resident of Hung Dung Ward (Vinh City) said: "I heard that the price of pork has dropped to the lowest level in the past year, but I still buy meat at the same price as when the price of pork peaked. I don't see much decrease."

The price of live pigs is currently lower than before thanks to the control of the epidemic and the smooth re-herd. However, the price of finished meat products in traditional markets, supermarkets and food stores is still high due to the increased costs in the intermediary stage. Only when the market harmonizes the three stages of production, circulation and consumption will consumers benefit.
