The mother of Tran Vo Khanh Huyen (8 years old) in Thanh Chuong said: “At first, her ears were swollen and hot, she complained of pain, and had a slight fever. The family took her to the medical station for examination and got antibiotics and patches to treat herself. After 1 week, her condition did not improve, her condition became worse: high fever, vomiting, lethargy... The family took her to the infectious diseases department of the Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital and learned that she had mumps and had complications of encephalitis. Currently, after 2 weeks of treatment, she is awake, healthy again, and eating well.”

Many families buy topical medications and treat their children at home, leading to complications of encephalitis.

Dr. Nguyen Van Son, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases - Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, recommends: "Children who have contracted mumps need to be kept clean and isolated from other children. Patients and caregivers need to wear standard medical masks to minimize the spread of the virus.

In particular, after at least 2 months of treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise and carbonated drinks to prevent dangerous complications. Currently, there is a vaccine to prevent the disease for children 12 months and older, so you should take your child to a medical facility to get vaccinated against mumps.

Although mumps is benign, if not treated promptly and properly, the patient may suffer from dangerous complications such as: orchitis in men: often occurs in puberty, rarely in children under 2 years old and adults over 40 years old, appearing 1-2 weeks after swelling of the parotid gland. The patient has testicular pain, then the testicles swell 3-4 times larger than normal, usually one side is swollen, can also swell both sides, after 2 weeks the swelling goes away.

After 2 months, it is possible to assess whether the testicles have atrophied or not. The rate of testicular atrophy due to mumps is 30 - 40%. If there is bilateral testicular atrophy, the possibility of infertility is very high;

Oophoritis: occurs in cases of post-pubertal disease (rarely infertility). If infected in pregnant women in the first 3 months, it can cause fetal malformations and miscarriage. Infection in the last 3 months can increase the risk of stillbirth or premature birth.
