Nghe An: Reduce 15% of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation

(Baonghean.vn) - REDD+ technical workshop aims to propose solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, manage, protect and develop sustainable forests in Nghe An.

The workshop was held on the morning of October 27, chaired byComrade Nguyen Tien Lam - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Attending were representatives of district leaders and forest management units.

Nghe An is a province with a large natural area and forest area, mainly special-use forests for biodiversity conservation and protective forests. Forest potential facilitates the development of hydropower industry, tourism development... Therefore, the management, protection and sustainable development of forests, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an urgent and important requirement, in order to ensure sustainable development, socio-economic efficiency, and security and defense in Nghe An...

Therefore, the key objective set at the workshop is to increase forest cover in Nghe An and reduce total annual carbon emissions.Specifically, under the national REDD+ program, Nghe An province has set a target of reducing 15% of greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation during the 2016-2020 period.

Regarding the scope of implementation, the province focuses on prioritizing 89 communes of 13 districts including: Anh Son, Con Cuong, Dien Chau, Do Luong, Ky Son, Nghia Dan, Que Phong, Quy Chau, Quy Hop, Tan Ky, Thanh Chuong, Tuong Duong and Yen Thanh.

Delegates discussed, evaluated and analyzed the current state of forests in Nghe An, the causes of deforestation and forest degradation, and identified key areas to implement solutions to protect and develop forests synchronously and sustainably.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Tien Lam, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, affirmed: To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Nghe An province will strengthen forest fire prevention and fighting; limit deforestation and forest degradation due to forest product exploitation and cardamom cultivation under the forest canopy; conserve and increase forest carbon stocks through the selection and propagation of superior forest trees for planting on local forestry land.
