According to legend, 594 years ago, the Lam Son insurgents led by General Le Loi chose Tra Lan citadel (in present-day Bong Khe commune - Con Cuong) as their strategic rear base to prepare for decisive battles. This was both a capital and an important military base of the Ming army.

Winning the battle of Bo Dang (in present-day Quy Chau district), Lam Son's army recruited more soldiers and received food support from the local people to besiege Tra Lan citadel, cut off the rescue route, and forced the enemy to surrender. After capturing Tra Lan citadel, the army continued to advance downstream, capturing a series of enemy citadels and then marched north, liberating Thang Long citadel, and eliminating the yoke of the Ming Dynasty.
