(Baonghe an.vn) - Tens of thousands of ginseng trees from the Oxfam project sponsored for 17 households in two villages, Tan Huong and To, Yen Khe commune (Con Cuong, Nghe An) died prematurely. The project was a complete failure.
17 hoursThe villagers participated in planting ginseng under the project of enhancing access to market information (MIS) and promoting climate change adaptation initiatives in agricultural sectors in Nghe An. This project is supported by the foreign organization Oxfam. After starting planting in August 2015, up to now, the model's signboard is still there but 90% of the ginseng plants have died. |
Mr. Lo Van Duyet (right) in Tan Huong village said that in addition to 2,100 ginseng seedlings supported by Oxfam, his family also planted 3,000 more trees, with an investment of 21 million VND, but so far not a single tree has survived. |
There are very few fresh ginseng roots left, the rest of the seedlings have become dry firewood. |
Mr. Lo Van Ty (Tan Huong village) is the pioneer in participating in the project by planting more than 10,000 ginseng trees. His family also invested more than 100 million VND to build a nursery, renovate the orange growing area to grow ginseng, but currently only less than 10% of the trees survive. |
According to households participating in the project, the ginseng trees grew very well after planting, but due to the "super" cold spell in January, in addition to the impact of frost and acid rain, most of the trees died, and the rest could not recover. |
This garden used to be planted with oranges by Mr. Lo Van Ty, in Tan Huong village, then was converted to grow ginseng, but all hopes were shattered when the plants died en masse. |
The ginseng seedlings that once attracted people's attention are now lying around. |
The people buy the ginseng seedlings for 7,000 VND/tree. According to the project, after 3 years of selling both the tree and the root, they will earn 200,000 VND/tree. On 1 hectare, more than 27,000 trees can be planted, which is calculated to generate a revenue of 5.4 billion VND/ha and this seems to be an extremely attractive way to get rich. However, it seems that "God" does not "give" it so easily. Almost all of the ginseng plants of 17 households died due to the weather. |
However, Mr. Lo Van Ty and other households said they are still determined to grow this crop if they continue to receive support and assistance from the People's Committee of Con Cuong district as well as related units. |
