(Baonghean.vn) - Currently, there are no large-scale pork processing enterprises in the province, so Nghe An is not able to freeze clean pork in large quantities to avoid losses due to the African swine fever pandemic.

Currently, in Nghe An, there are some farms that raise livestock according to safe procedures, however, there are no enterprises specializing in slaughtering and supplying pork on a large scale. Photo: Xuan Hoang

Faced with the outbreak of African swine fever in the province, threatening the pig herds of localities, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has requested localities and businesses to freeze clean pork to ensure there is no shortage of food in the coming time.

Mr. Nguyen Van Lap - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: To freeze pork, it is necessary to meet two factors: clean, safe pork and having a large specialized slaughter and freezing enterprise.

For Nghe An, clean pigs exist, because in the province there are some places raising pigs according to safe, closed processes; but currently there are no large enterprises specializing in slaughtering and freezing. Therefore, Nghe An cannot currently freeze clean pork at this time, as some provinces are doing.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Lap, at a time when African swine fever is breaking out in some localities, people need to stay calm and not boycott pork; authorities need to control the quarantine and slaughter of pigs well to prevent the spread of the disease and create trust among the people.

Data from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine: From March 13 to May 31, in Nghe An, 249 households and 104 hamlets of 60 communes in 14 districts and towns were infected with African swine fever. The total number of infected pigs that were destroyed was 1,274, with a total weight of 63,325.5 kg.
