Nghe An: 'Missed appointment' with outstanding craft village artisans

(Baonghean.vn) – On the evening of August 26, for the first time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade held a ceremony to confer the titles of “Meritorious Artisan” and “People’s Artisan” in the field of handicrafts. Among the 21 localities with honored artisans, Nghe An was not named in this event.

In this conferment ceremony, 16 individuals in the professions of embroidery, pottery, restored embroidery, silk flowers, silver beans, bronze carving, dried flowers, wood carving, silver carving, bronze, bronze casting, and stone carving were conferred the title of "People's Artisan" from the following localities: Hanoi, Thai Binh, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam.

87 individuals were proposed for the title of "Meritorious Artisan" in the fields of fine art carpentry, pottery, Dong Ho folk paintings, lacquer, lacquer carving, sculpture, sculpting, traditional gold and silver lacquer, embroidery, rattan weaving, rattan weaving, silk weaving, ceramics... of the localities of Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Lam Dong, Binh Duong, An Giang, Long An, Tra Vinh, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh City.

Nghe An is one of the localities with vibrant activities in the field of handicrafts. Up to now, the whole province has 139 craft villages and more than 300 villages with crafts. There are craft villages over 700 years old such as Trung Kien shipbuilding village (Nghi Loc).

Despite many ups and downs, craft villages are playing a positive role in localities. 72% of craft villages are developing sustainably, their products meet the needs and tastes of consumers, but some occupations depend on the export market of enterprises, have difficulty in raw materials, low wages for workers, so some craft villages such as bamboo and rattan weaving, crocheting, and sedge mats find it difficult to survive.

To encourage craft villages, honor artisans, skilled workers, in December 2015, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision 73/2015/QD-UBND, promulgating the Regulations on considering and awarding the title of Artisan, Skilled Worker in the field of small-scale industry - craft villages in Nghe An province. The first implementation of this policy will be held at the end of 2016. Thus, basically, up to this point, Nghe An has not had any craft village artisans, skilled workers honored, except for an artisan in Trung Kien shipbuilding village (Nghi Loc) who was specially awarded the title "Artisan of Vietnamese Craft Village" by the Vietnam Craft Village Association.

The 2016 “People’s Artisan - Meritorious Artisan” title conferment ceremony is a practical activity to honor artisans and traditional handicraft villages - a place where cultural quintessence converges and is also a major event of the handicraft industry to promote Vietnamese products to domestic and international markets.

Along with the above event, there will be an Exhibition - Fair of handicrafts (expected to take place from August 26 - 29) with 200 booths; of which 100 booths are displayed in the exhibition area and 100 standard booths in the fair area and mainly Vietnamese handicrafts, no foreign origin goods.

In particular, with the spirit of support from the national industrial promotion fund, 100% of the exhibition booths are completely free.
