At the end of 1788, King Le Chieu Thong betrayed the nation and sent people to ask for help from the Qing Dynasty. King Can Long took that opportunity to send Ton Sy Nghi to lead troops to invade our country.
On November 20, Mau Than year (December 16, 1788), 290,000 Qing troops invaded our country and stormed into Thang Long Citadel, then controlled many large areas in Bac Ha.
Nguyen Hue received the urgent news and immediately held a coronation ceremony on November 25, Mau Than year (December 22, 1788), named the reign Quang Trung, and immediately ordered the army to march.

Emperor Quang Trung himself urged the army, both land and sea, to go into battle. On December 29, 1788, he went to Nghe An to recruit and train soldiers, and in a short time, he recruited more than ten thousand elite soldiers to march to attack Thang Long citadel.

Right on New Year's Eve of the Year of the Rooster 1789, three Tay Son infantry troops set out from Tam Diep. The main attack was personally commanded by Emperor Quang Trung, directly attacking the defense system of the South of Thang Long, with Ngoc Hoi fort being the key stronghold. Admiral Long commanded the attack, suddenly attacking Dong Da fort, then penetrating deep into Ton Si Nghi's headquarters in Tay Long palace.
Previously, Admiral Loc and Admiral Thuyet commanded two naval forces also departing from Bien Son, crossing the sea to attack Hai Duong and arranged to block the Qing army's escape route.

With the genius of military strategy, formidable battle formation and lightning-fast attack of the Tay Son army "marching like flying, advancing very quickly, generals falling from the sky, soldiers emerging from the ground", after only 5 days and nights, the entire defense system and resistance of the Qing army was smashed.
The two battles of Ngoc Hoi and Dong Da on the morning of the 5th day of Tet were resounding victories, playing a decisive role in the victory of the great defeat of the Qing army and the liberation of Thang Long citadel.

At noon on the 5th day of the Lunar New Year (January 30, 1789), Emperor Quang Trung, riding a war elephant, led his victorious army into Thang Long amidst the joyful welcome of the people.
That heroic feat honored the extraordinary strength of the nation and the great military talent of Emperor Quang Trung. With such great stature and significance, the Ngoc Hoi - Dong Da victory is respectfully remembered by the people and has become an annual traditional festival every spring.

After the great victory over the Qing army to liberate Thang Long, Emperor Quang Trung carried out reforms to build the country, communicated with the Qing Dynasty through many skillful diplomatic policies to avoid war, focused on building a peaceful country, consolidated the government and increased the national defense force to protect the country.
Emperor Quang Trung chose the land of "geomancy and talented people" Yen Truong and Vinh Yen, where there are Ru Quyet and Mieu Son (now Dung Quyet mountain, Trung Do ward, Vinh city, Nghe An) to build the capital called Phuong Hoang Trung Do.

Promoting the morality of "when drinking water, remember the source, when eating fruit, remember the person who planted the tree", every year on the 5th day of the Lunar New Year, at the Temple of Emperor Quang Trung, Vinh city, a ceremony is held to commemorate the Ngoc Hoi - Dong Da victory to review the great achievements of the hero Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue, who contributed to protecting the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, for the longevity of the nation, for the prosperity and happiness of the people.

In the joyful and exciting atmosphere of the Spring of At Ty, blending in with the resounding drums of the Ngoc Hoi - Dong Da victory, Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee Le Hong Vinh and delegates, together with the people respectfully offered flowers and incense to commemorate Emperor Quang Trung; vowing to promote the tradition of patriotism, follow the example of the nation's heroes, strive to join hands and contribute to building the homeland and country to become increasingly rich, beautiful and civilized.

Throughout his career, besides his glorious military achievements, Emperor Quang Trung paid great attention to preserving and promoting the cultural identity and language of the nation; and attached great importance to education, examinations, and talent to build the country.

Welcoming the new spring, honoring the tradition of respecting teachers and valuing education of the Vietnamese people, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Hong Vinh and delegates opened the spring writing at the Temple of Emperor Quang Trung, a traditional activity held annually at the Temple.
