Nghe An: Single-variety seasonal rice in large fields achieves high yield
(Baonghean) - People in mountainous districts are actively harvesting the winter-spring rice crop with an average yield of about 44 quintals/ha. This production season marks a strong transformation of the local government and people when applying advanced techniques to large-scale field production, a highly effective variety.
These days, in the fields of Pung village, Tam Thai commune, Tuong Duong district, people are bustling with harvesting the winter-spring rice crop. This year, Ms. Vi May's family produced 2.5 sao of rice, with a yield of over 3 quintals/sao.
According to Ms. May, the rice area is located in the planning area of large-scale fields, so it is recommended to invest in intensive farming synchronously, in accordance with technical processes. The production process used multi-function plows to prepare the land, used BTE 1 hybrid varieties and invested in high-content fertilizers, so the rice crop was good.
Lung village has over 15 hectares of rice, with an average yield of over 60 quintals/ha, making people more confident and excited to participate in the large-scale field. Mr. Vi Viet Kieu - Vice Chairman of Tam Thai Commune People's Committee said: The whole commune planted nearly 100 hectares of winter-spring rice, with an average yield of 55 quintals/ha. The reason for this year's good harvest is because the commune planned a large-scale field concentrated in Lung village... Households participating in the large-scale field receive subsidies for rice seeds, technical training, and instructions on care and pest control.

The farming method has completely changed compared to the old production practices. In the large-scale field model, farmers sow the same rice variety at the same time and apply synchronous technical measures from seed selection, fertilizer materials, and farming techniques. At the same time, the canal production area has been concreted, actively leading water from Khe Xao dam in Can village to irrigate the rice.
This season, Tuong Duong planted over 8,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in the communes of Tam Thai, Tam Dinh, Nga My, Xieng My... with an average yield of 49 quintals/ha, of which many communes such as Tam Thai and Tam Dinh achieved a yield of 53-54 quintals/ha/crop. This season, Tuong Duong district coordinated with sectors and units to test and select many high-quality rice varieties suitable for each plot of land; at the same time, well implemented the State's policy mechanism on supporting people with 50% of the cost of buying seeds. The district contacted businesses to support interest rates for 6 months for farmers to borrow fertilizer.
Many communes have invested in fertilizers with higher content than usual, concentrated in Tam Thai and Nga My communes, so the rice yield is exceptionally high. During the tillering stage, many areas were affected by leaf rollers, brown planthoppers, and white-backed planthoppers. The district promptly directed the communes to spray simultaneously, spraying both infected and uninfected areas to suppress the epidemic on 100% of the area, so the pests did not affect the rice yield. Currently, Tuong Duong has harvested over 60% of the area, and it is expected that in the next 15 days, the entire district will finish harvesting the winter-spring rice area.
In Con Cuong district, people have planted over 1,900 hectares of winter-spring rice and have so far harvested over 70 hectares. Currently, the winter-spring rice is ripening, with an average yield estimated at 55 quintals/hectare. The district is directing localities and people to concentrate human resources, speed up the harvest, and create land for winter-spring crop production. It is expected that the entire area will be harvested before September 25 to deploy production of 900 hectares of winter crops.
Mr. Luong Van Hoa - Vice Chairman of Mon Son Commune People's Committee, said: This year, in general, the rice crop is basically good, only more than 30 hectares affected by storm No. 10 were flooded, so the yield is low. We are directing people to urgently harvest when the weather is favorable to plant winter crops. Through discussion, Mr. Nguyen Khac Sy - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Con Cuong district said: "Although the production of summer-autumn rice and early winter-spring crop in Con Cuong has encountered many disadvantages in terms of weather and pests, in general, this year is still basically a good crop. We are directing to speed up the harvest, especially in areas flooded by storm No. 10, to harvest early to avoid the situation of rice sprouting".
This year, Anh Son district planted over 3,000 hectares, with an average yield of 44 quintals/hectare, of which many communes achieved high yields such as Duc Son, Vinh Son 53 - 55 quintals/hectare/crop. In this production season, the district boldly planned 200 hectares of large-scale fields concentrated in Duc Son, Vinh Son, Tao Son communes... and coordinated with sectors and units to select many high-quality rice varieties suitable for each field.

The district has also implemented well the State's policy mechanism of 100% support for rice seeds for large-scale fields. Communes stand up to guarantee fertilizer loans for people in the form of fertilizer supply enterprises supporting interest rates for a period of 6 months. Thanks to timely forecasting and spraying of pests such as leaf rollers, white-backed planthoppers, etc., rice productivity is guaranteed.
In Vinh Son commune, farmers planted 125 hectares of the summer-autumn crop, with an average yield of over 52 quintals/hectare. This year, the commune planned to plant 50 hectares of large-scale fields, contiguous with each plot, planting the same rice variety with the application of a 100% support policy for seed prices and the introduction of machinery into production. Right from the beginning of the season, the commune mobilized people to dredge canals, maintain the banks of the areas and plots. In particular, the main canal system has been reinforced, thereby preventing water loss, ensuring irrigation for the production area.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lap - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: While the summer-autumn rice crop failed, this year's winter-spring rice still achieved a fairly high yield, averaging 44 quintals/ha. Some districts achieved high yields such as Quy Chau and Con Cuong, reaching 53 quintals/ha... Currently, the whole province has harvested over 15,000/25,000 ha, and it is expected that the winter-spring rice crop will be harvested by September 25.
