Ms. Vo Thi Van - Agricultural civil servantNghi Long commune(Nghi Loc) said: “This winter crop, the whole Nghi Long commune planted 45 hectares of various vegetables and 0.5 hectares of flowers. The big flood in early October damaged the winter crops, the water receded slowly, the soil was wet, so replanting encountered many difficulties. However, up to now, when the vegetables had just grown green and the flowers had just taken root, there was heavy rain. The area of vegetables and flowers in the greenhouse has not been affected; but in the fields, many areas were flooded, the vegetables were crushed. If the rain continues, I fear we will lose everything.”

As one of the localities considered typical in winter crop production, this year, people in Hung Tan commune (Hung Nguyen) have encountered many difficulties due to consecutive unfavorable weather. At the beginning of the early winter crop, 8 hectares of cucumbers that were about to be harvested could not be saved, causing billions of dong in damage. After the flood, people re-cultivated the land and planted cucumbers on 2-rice land, however, heavy rains in the past 2 days have caused more than 1 hectare of cucumbers of Phan village people that were bearing young fruit to be flooded.

Mr. Phan Dang Minh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Tan Commune (Hung Nguyen) said: "Currently, the rain has caused flooding of over 1 hectare of cucumbers of the people of Phan village. The commune has directed the people to stick to the fields, deploy measures to save the cucumber plants such as: dredging ditches, draining water, mobilizing pumps to drain water and moving the whole cucumber pot from low to high places, waiting for the water to recede before replanting."

According to statistics, early spring,The entire Thuong Tan Loc commune (Nam Dan) planted 300 hectares of corn, 50 hectares of peanuts and 90 hectares of various vegetables. Although they had proactively planned their crop schedules to avoid flooding, this year, due to unfavorable weather, heavy rains that lasted for the past 2 days have affected the local early spring crop. Many fields were flooded, causing cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower, etc. to have their leaves crushed; many areas of corn and 4-5 leaf peanuts were flooded.

“Currently, there is only light flooding, and people have gone to the fields to drain water and drain the water. The commune also regularly directs hamlets, notifies households and updates weather conditions on information pages so that people can stay informed and have plans to protect their early spring crops. However, if it continues to rain heavily and for a long time, the risk of flooding is very high,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Long, an agricultural officer of Thuong Tan Loc commune.

The rice-growing communes such as Nam Anh and Nam Xuan also suffered heavy damage. Many vegetable fields were deeply submerged in water; many greenhouses were also flooded.

To protect winter and early spring crops, in the face of extreme weather conditions, the District People's Committee and the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development have actively followed the grassroots and had specific plans for each production area. Accordingly, the areas that are ready for harvest should be harvested quickly; for newly planted areas, the work of preventing localized flooding should be focused; forces should be mobilized to clear trees, remove obstacles and blockages on the flood drainage canal after the spillway...

Although they proactively set up "field" nets to cover the crops, due to continuous, torrential rain, many greenhouses in Hung Dong commune (Vinh city) had their nets blown away, leaving vegetables flooded and crushed. Photo: Thanh Phuc

In Hung Dong commune – the vegetable production “barnacle” of Vinh city, the vegetable area of more than 12 hectares is also facing the risk of severe flooding. Farmers have proactively stretched makeshift nets to cover the vegetable beds, but the torrential rain has crushed the vegetable leaves.

Faced with the complicated weather, the People's Committee of Hung Dong commune mobilized people to clear the water flow and drain the vegetables. At the same time, a public announcement was made on the loudspeakers, calling on people to quickly harvest when the weather cleared up to minimize damage.
