Nghe An: Fishermen caught a sunfish weighing more than 100 kg
(Baonghean.vn) - On May 7, the fishing boat of Mr. Nguyen Van Quang (29 years old), residing in Phu Lien village, Quynh Long commune, Quynh Luu district (Nghe An) caught a sunfish weighing more than 100 kg in the Gulf of Tonkin.

It took all the crew more than 2 hours to bring the fish onto the boat. The crew later discovered that it was a rare species of ocean sunfish. Mr. Quang and the crew then pulled the net back, carefully chilled the fish, and brought the boat back to shore. According to Mr. Quang, from the time he discovered the large fish in the net, it took him and the crew more than 2 hours to bring it onto the boat's hold.
Having been at sea for many years, this was the first time he had caught a fish of such a large size. On the same day, Quang's boat docked and the crew salvaged a rare ocean sunfish weighing more than 100 kg and measuring nearly 2 meters in length.
In recent years, sunfish have been continuously caught in fishermen's nets in the Hoang Mai town and Quynh Luu district, Nghe An. The sunfish has become one of the most important artifacts serving the research work to answer many questions that remain unanswered in the process of studying this special fish species.

The scientific name of the ocean sunfish is Mola mola, belonging to the pufferfish order (Tetraodontiformes). This fish species is listed in the Vietnam Red Book as an endangered species in need of protection. They are mainly distributed in the Gulf of Tonkin and the central coast.
