This spring crop, Anh Son district planted over 2,300 hectares of corn, including over 500 hectares of biomass corn for animal feed.

Mr. Nguyen Van Bac, village 7, Cam Son commune, shared: This is the second crop that his family has harvested corn to sell to dairy companies. Due to favorable weather and dense corn planting, this crop has a good corn yield. With an area of 4 sao, his family harvested 10 tons of plants. The current purchase price is 800,000 VND/ton, and his family earned 8 million VND. Mr. Sy calculated: "Growing biomass corn, farmers earn over 100 million VND/ha/year, and can rotate 4 crops/year. Meanwhile, growing corn for grain only produces 3 crops/year.

Each hectare of corn can harvest 40 - 50 tons of corn biomass in 80 days, selling for 30 - 40 million VND. If corn is grown for grain, the growing time lasts from 120 - 130 days, harvesting 4.4 tons of corn kernels, selling for 25 million VND. For farmers, the advantage of growing corn biomass is that the company directly comes to buy, cut, and load onto the truck, farmers only provide additional support, so the cost of harvesting is significantly reduced.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, village 7, Cam Son commune, confided: Her family has 3 sao of land specializing in growing corn. This season, she grows biomass corn, which is currently sold for 800,000 VND/ton. It turns out that 1 sao yields 2.5 tons of plants, worth 2.2 million VND. According to Ms. Hien, growing biomass corn also has the advantage that people do not have to worry too much about weather and diseases affecting the yield and quality of corn kernels, and it also increases the land use coefficient and increases income. This year, Ms. Hien's family will apply biomass corn growing 4 crops/year to increase income.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Dang - Head of the Department of Agriculture of Anh Son district said: For a long time, the locality has been considered a large corn granary of Nghe An province, with an area always maintained at over 2,300 hectares/crop. Recently, the demand for corn used as animal feed at cattle farms in and outside the province has increased, and Anh Son farmers have focused on growing biomass corn for high income. This spring crop, the whole district has over 500 hectares of biomass corn concentrated in the communes of Tam Son, Dinh Son, Cam Son, and Thach Son. Currently, corn farmers in the district are focusing on using short-term varieties such as CT888, CT919, CP101... These are the varieties chosen by the majority of farmers, because they have outstanding advantages such as short growth time; higher plant density, high biomass yield and suitability to local soil conditions./.
