Nghe An: Raising crispy carp and snakehead fish brings in hundreds of millions of dong in profit
(Baonghean) - In 2019, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center directed the successful construction of 6 types of aquaculture models at 6 locations with 16 households participating in demonstrations to increase production efficiency, while selecting species that can adapt to climate change such as crispy carp, hedgehoghead snakehead fish....
From the capital source of the National Agricultural Extension Center through Contract No. 88/HD-TTKN dated May 2, 2019 with the Agricultural Extension Center of Thanh Hoa province, implementing 01 model of commercial farming of sea bass in ponds associated with product consumption, scale of 1 hectare in Quynh Di ward, Hoang Mai town with 05 participating households.

Along with that, the Center has also successfully directed 05 types of fisheries extension models from the provincial budget with a total model support fund of nearly 600 million VND with 11 participating households.
Specifically, the model of raising snakehead fish at high density with product consumption, scale of 0.2 ha in Quynh Luu district; model of raising crispy grass carp in plastic cages in dam lakes, scale of 03 cages (30 m3/cage) in Thai Hoa town; model of raising crispy grass carp in cages, scale of 04 cages (20m3/cage) in Con Cuong district; Cua Lo shrimp production model using dryer and vacuum packaging technology, scale of 02 households, in Cua Lo town; 1 model of commercial farming of white-leg shrimp in floating cages using Biofloc technology in the winter crop of 2019.

Up to this point, all models have been accepted and some models have shown high economic efficiency. The most prominent is the model of high-density specialized snakehead fish farming associated with product consumption, at 02 households: Mr. Bui Van Thoa in hamlet 11, scale 0.14 ha and Mr. Ho Cong Trung in hamlet 9, Quynh Hung commune, Quynh Luu district, scale 0.06 ha. After nearly 06 months of farming, the average fish size reached 800 g/fish, survival rate 65%, with a selling price of 50,000 VND/kg. After deducting costs, the model earned a profit of nearly 300 million VND.
From the results of the 2 models of raising grass carp and common carp in cages mentioned above, it shows that the raising time is from 5-7 months when (pond farming) down to 3-5 months, all 04 farming households have a profit of 40-47 million VND. Especially, it is very convenient in the harvesting process, can be harvested partially or harvested completely while the toughness and crispness of the fish meat remains unchanged, a phenomenon commonly seen when farming in ponds. This success has opened a new direction in raising crispy grass carp and crispy carp.

Next is the model of producing shrimp using drying and vacuum packaging technology, with a scale of 02 households, at Mrs. Mai Thi Ly's household, Nghi Thuy ward and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Huong's household, Nghi Hoa ward, Cua Lo town. Economic efficiency reached 33 million VND/production batch. The product shows many advantages compared to the previous traditional production when people dried with honeycomb coal and charcoal. Products dried by this new method ensure food hygiene and safety, and are packaged aesthetically and safely.
In addition, it is necessary to mention the success of the commercial model of raising white-leg shrimp in floating cages using Biofloc technology in the winter crop of 2019. After 60 days of raising, the shrimp reached an average size of 80 shrimp/kg, with a survival rate of 85%, with a selling price of 180,000 VND/kg after deducting costs, the model earned a profit of over 100 million VND.
From this success, it can be affirmed that for the harsh climate conditions of Nghe An in the low-temperature winter crop, if the planned areas allow farming such as: Dien Trung, Dien Hai, Dien Chau district... If shrimp farmers have basic investment (building cages, roofs...) then they can put them into farming. On the other hand, the model results also show that the price of commercial shrimp in this crop is higher and more stable than the first crop every year.

From the successes of fisheries extension models in 2019, it can be seen that: Models must be built from the requirements of production practices (models linked to product consumption, new rural goals, adaptation to climate change, etc.).
