New Zealand is considered a potential market for Vietnamese businesses to access. Most of the products that New Zealand needs are products that many Vietnamese businesses are able to supply and vice versa.

Vietnam and New Zealand’s participation in multilateral FTAs has resulted in tariff and non-tariff barriers being increasingly lowered or eliminated. This is a great advantage that helps Vietnamese goods increase their competitiveness with goods from countries that do not have FTAs with New Zealand. New Zealand’s policy of seeking other supply partners and markets other than the EU and China has also contributed to opening up opportunities for Vietnam in the import and export sector.

In terms of importing goods into Vietnam, New Zealand's main export items include dairy products, beef, sheep, wool, wood, wood products, fruits and nuts, including fruits such as kiwi, cherry, apple..., seafood such as tuna, salmon... These are items that are popular with many Vietnamese people.

However, despite such advantages, the two-way import-export turnover between Nghe An and New Zealand has not grown as expected. According to statistics, Nghe An's export turnover to New Zealand in 2023 only reached 1.43 million USD, an increase of 17% over the same period last year. In the first 7 months of 2023, Nghe An's total export turnover to New Zealand reached 960.8 thousand USD, with only 8 exporting enterprises with the main items: footwear, packaging of all kinds, rice, superfine white limestone powder, textiles, paving stones....

Mr. Cao Minh Tu - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade said: Although many enterprises in the province have the need to export and import goods to this market, the conditions are still quite vague, because New Zealand is a demanding market, requiring high quality imported goods. In addition, enterprises also have difficulty finding partners, so penetrating this market is not easy.

The conference aims to support businesses in updating the latest information about the market; Answering and supporting businesses in resolving some difficulties and obstacles when exporting and importing with New Zealand. Thereby, finding solutions to effectively implement export promotion activities for some specific products of Nghe An province to this market, maximizing the advantages of the ASEAN – Australia – New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA).

The conference was informed by Ms. Tran Dieu Oanh - Vietnamese Trade Counselor in New Zealand to businesses about the New Zealand market; shared notes when exporting and importing to the New Zealand market.

Enterprises in the province also interacted and discussed directly with the Counselor about difficulties and obstacles in the import-export process as well as opportunities for connection in the coming time.
