Nghe An dismantles Euro 2020 football betting ring worth over 1.6 billion VND

On the morning of July 12, Nghi Loc District Police (Nghe An) said that the unit had just successfully discovered a gambling and gambling organization case, in the form of "soccer betting", arrested 8 related subjects.

Previously, from the beginning of May 2021, through the work of grasping the local situation, Nghi Loc District Police discovered a gambling ring in the form of "Football Betting", with a very large transaction amount, attracting many participants, operating very sophisticatedly and professionally, led by Dang Viet Hung (born 1996), residing in Thai Son hamlet, Nghi Thai commune, Nghi Loc district.

Dang Viet Hung used the UW88 channel to get "odds" on football matches of all international football tournaments, then used his "henchmen" to lure subjects inside and outside the area to participate in football betting activities. The transaction amount of each match was up to tens of millions of dong. The gambling and gambling organization of the subjects caused outrage among the masses and officials and civil servants in the area.

Faced with that situation, the leaders of Nghi Loc District Police assigned the Criminal Investigation Team on Student - Economic - Environmental Crimes and Nghi Thai Commune Police to co-chair and coordinate with the Police of communes in the area to establish a project on "Gambling and organizing gambling".

During the verification and struggle process, the Special Task Force persistently studied the subjects' operating patterns, applied a combination of professional measures, divided into verification and investigation teams in many areas, met with witnesses to collect more information, and built up the subjects emerging inside and outside the area.

On the evening of July 8, 2021, while the subjects were "betting" on the Euro 2020 semi-final match between England and Denmark, seeing a favorable opportunity, the leaders of the Task Force decided to crack the case, dividing into 8 working groups to simultaneously arrest 8 subjects all residing in Nghi Thai commune, Nghi Loc district for gambling, including Dang Viet Hung (born 1996); Nguyen Van Ngoc (born 1990); Nguyen Ngoc Anh (born 1991); Vuong Anh Tai (born 1999); Le Van Sinh (born 1999); Vuong Dinh Hung (born 1977); Nguyen Van Long (born 1969); Vuong Dinh Hai (born 1995).

Confiscated evidence included 155 million VND, 1 laptop, 12 mobile phones, 3 motorbikes and other documents and objects related to gambling.

Initial evidence proves that the amount of money the subjects transacted for gambling from the beginning of May until the time of arrest was more than 1.6 billion VND.

During the working process with the Police Agency, the subjects initially confessed their crimes. In the second semi-final match between England and Denmark on the evening of July 8, 2021, the subjects gambled for 211,500,000 VND. The leader, Dang Viet Hung, organized the "bets" of each match and directly paid the winners and losers after the football matches ended.

Currently, Nghi Loc District Police are continuing to investigate and expand the case, arrest the remaining subjects and consolidate the case file to strictly handle the subjects according to the provisions of law.
