Nghi Long is one of the localities with the largest summer-autumn watermelon growing area in the district. Along with the current spring peanut harvest, farmers are focusing on planting 40 hectares of summer watermelon.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan, hamlet 13, Nghi Long commune, said: Watermelon is a high-income crop. Last year, her family planted 1 sao of summer-autumn watermelon and earned nearly 14 million VND after 2 months. This year, her family expanded the area to 5 sao of summer-autumn watermelon. Watermelon is a short-term crop. The time from planting to harvesting is within 2 months. Therefore, to speed up the production process, these days, Ms. Loan's family focuses on human resources in the fields to both plant and bring water into the fields so that the watermelon plants can take root quickly.

In the summer-autumn crop of 2016, the whole Nghi Loc district produced 150 hectares of summer-autumn watermelon. Mainly the melon varieties: Trang Nong 755 and Phu Dong melon. Melons are only suitable for sandy soil fields with proactive water sources and fast drainage systems. Therefore, the watermelon growing area of ​​Nghi Loc is mainly concentrated in the communes of Nghi Long, Nghi Truong, Nghi Thinh, Nghi Hop, Nghi Khanh, Nghi Thuan, Nghi Trung, Nghi Thach.

To ensure a successful summer-autumn crop, entering the production season, the Department of Agriculture has advised the District People's Committee to direct localities to deploy internal irrigation traffic, dredge canals and clear water flows to ensure good drainage for summer-autumn crops.
