(Baonghean.vn) - For the past three years, Nghi Long commune, Nghi Loc has brought cantaloupe into the fields for high economic efficiency. Currently, people have completed the breeding of 6 hectares of spring-summer cantaloupe.

This spring-summer crop, 70 households in the commune planted melons on a total area of 6 hectares, concentrated in hamlets 3, 4, 12 and 13. Larger households planted up to 3 sao, while smaller households planted 1 sao of melon. |
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoi in Hamlet 12 said: last year her family planted 3 sao of melons. After 60 days of planting, after deducting expenses, her family earned approximately 50 million VND. This year, she and her husband hope to have another bumper crop of melons. |

Right at the beginning of the season, 70 households registered to grow spring-summer Le melons and were trained by Nghi Loc District Agricultural Extension Station in coordination with the Commune People's Committee and Nong Huu Seed Joint Stock Company on techniques for growing Ngan Huy super sweet melons. For melons to achieve high yields, the soil must be carefully prepared and fertilized in a balanced manner. The melon beds must be covered with plastic to retain moisture, prevent fertilizer loss, and prevent weeds. Le melons are a plant variety that is sensitive to herbicides, so using this pesticide is taboo. |
When the melon plants grow to about 30cm long, farmers must position them parallel to each other so that all the melon plants receive enough light, and the grower can control the number of fruits on a plant. If any plant bears too many fruits, the melons will be stunted. |
The Commune People’s Committee recommends that farmers grow melons in a safe way. Only use biological pesticides that are safe for growers and consumers. Only spray pesticides when the melon plants are still small, following the “4 rights” principle. |
Mr. Nguyen Tu Ngoc - Vice Chairman of Nghi Long Commune People's Committee said: The time to grow melons is short, only 60 days, so after this spring-summer crop, households will continue to produce the summer-autumn crop. If the weather is favorable like last year, on average, one hectare will grow two crops, after deducting expenses, it will bring in an income of 500 million VND. That is not including the income from various vegetables produced in the next winter crop on the same area. |
