(Baonghean.vn) - Currently, farmersNghi Long commune, Nghi Loc districtThey not only grow watermelons and cucumbers, but also cantaloupe on a fairly large area. According to the locals, cantaloupe is also a short-term crop with low costs, yielding a decent profit.

Taking advantage of the mild weather, farmers in Hamlet 12, Nghi Long Commune, have been busy harvesting cantaloupes in recent days. Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, who is picking cantaloupes to sell to traders, said that in previous years, her family has planted 3 to 4 acres of cantaloupes. In previous years, the yield was low, and during peak harvest, the price was only around 5,000-6,000 VND/kg. However, this year, the crop is abundant and the price is good. Her family, for example, planted 6 acres of Nong Huu cantaloupes this year, yielding nearly 7 tons and earning over 80 million VND.

Farmers in Nghi Long are delighted because the melon harvest is abundant and the prices are good.

Cantaloupe was introduced to Nghi Long's fields three years ago, but it was initially grown on a small scale, resulting in low yields. Following the district and commune's policy of restructuring crop patterns, this year's summer-autumn crop saw farmers introduce many high-value crops, including cantaloupe. Currently, Nghi Long has nearly 10 hectares of cantaloupe, concentrated mainly in hamlets 3, 4, 13, and 12.

Cantaloupes from Nong Huu are planted around March and harvested in late June and early July. This year, thanks to proper cultivation techniques, the yield is high, with large, fragrant, and delicious melons, making them popular with consumers. Therefore, traders from within and outside the district have come directly to the fields to purchase them since the beginning of the season. The average yield is 1 ton of melons per sao (approximately 1000 square meters). With the current selling price at the field of 12,000-13,000 VND/kg, each sao of melons yields an income of 12-13 million VND. After deducting expenses, farmers here earn a profit of 7-9 million VND per sao, which is three times more profitable than growing rice.
