Bitter melon has just been introduced for experimental cultivation by the people of Tao Son but it also brings high economic efficiency. |
In the resolution of the commune party congress for the 2015-2020 term, the commune continued to put squash and some other crops with high economic value into production as commodity crops, increasing the area to 75 to 80 hectares.
The crop that Cao Son people converted from ineffective rice, potato, and cassava fields to grow today is bitter melon.
Ms. Le Thi Bao, village 8, Tao Son commune, one of the pioneer farmers in converting crops in Tao Son shared: "Realizing that the bitter melon growing model is more effective than other crops and is suitable for the land here, her family boldly switched to growing bitter melon.
Currently, bitter melon is very fruitful, the estimated yield is about 1 ton of fruit/sao, with the current selling price of 9,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, the area of 2 sao has brought her family an income of 15 - 20 million VND, higher than growing other crops.
Besides converting zucchini and bitter melon crops, the converted crop that cannot be ignored in Tao Son is hybrid gac. Based on the characteristics of hybrid gac trees that are easy to grow, not picky about soil, and have stable output, in recent years, the model of growing gac has begun to take shape in Tao Son and has helped many people have an additional source of income.
The model of converting to hybrid gac cultivation in Tao Son commune is a new model implemented by Nghe An Food Joint Stock Company in contract with the Commune Farmers' Association. Implemented in April 2014, currently, the whole commune has 54 households growing gac with an area of nearly 6 hectares.
Mr. Hoang Van Cam, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tao Son Commune, said: After 2 years of implementation, the model has achieved 8-9 quintals/sao each year, bringing in an income of 15-20 million VND/sao. To create trust for people in converting to new crops, before introducing hybrid gac varieties for planting, the company organized for 32 households participating in growing gac to visit the model in Quy Chau, which initially created trust for people to confidently invest in gac trees.
To change the way of thinking and working to have effective crop conversion models, Tao Son commune has promoted propaganda and mobilized people to actively change the structure of crops and livestock, choose suitable plants and breeds to develop the economy and stabilize life.
In addition, every year, the commune regularly organizes training courses on science and technology transfer, introduces new seedlings and varieties into production; develops specific programs, plans and projects suitable for the locality for implementation. On the other hand, it creates mechanisms and policies to support and encourage development for farming households, while investing in building irrigation and traffic infrastructure... Thanks to that, many households have changed their thinking, boldly invested in economic development, diversified crops, applied modern science and technology in production, contributing to significantly increasing productivity and product quality.
Exchanging experiences on crop restructuring from practice, comrade Hoang Dinh Son - Secretary of the Commune Party Committee said: “Crop restructuring is a policy proposed by the Party Committee in this term. Therefore, this is a regular key task of the entire political system to focus on effective leadership. Promoting economic restructuring is focused by Tao Son in all hamlets. Depending on the terrain and soil conditions of each area and each hamlet, Tao Son has different conversion directions to choose strong crops to invest in production. The effectiveness of the conversion of crop structure in Tao Son in recent times has affirmed the right direction in the economic restructuring of the locality, the income of the people has improved significantly. Currently, the average income per capita of the commune reaches over 24.7 million VND/person/year, the poverty rate has decreased to 7.3%. |
