In a press release, Mr. Sanders emphasized: "The United States must support the rule of law, free elections, and the right of the Venezuelan people to self-determination. However, we must learn from the past and not engage in acts of overthrowing governments or inciting coups, as we have done in Chile, Guatemala, Brazil, or the Dominican Republic. The United States has a long history of inappropriately intervening in Latin American countries, and we should not follow that path again."
The administration of US President Donald Trump has recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the South American country's interim president. Washington has also called on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to relinquish power.
In response to this action, Mr. Maduro announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Washington and asked US diplomatic staff to leave Venezuela./.
