Nghia Hoi (Nghia Dan): Residents are "thirsty" for clean water.

(Baonghean.vn) -The prolonged intense heat has caused the water sources in streams and reservoirs in Nghia Hoi-Nghia Dan to dry up, leading to a serious shortage of clean water for over 700 households.

Ms. Dau Thi Lam from Dong Hoi 2 hamlet said: "The prolonged heat has caused the rainwater tank to dry up, so we have to use plastic containers to fetch water from the Cau Mang stream (over 500 meters from our house) for bathing, washing clothes, and even cooking. My family of four has to spend half a day every three days carrying water to ensure we have enough for daily use. But with this intense heat, the Cau Mang stream is running dry, and we don't know where we'll get water for our daily needs."

Ms. Dau Thi Tuat from Dong Hoi 2 hamlet lamented: "For the past few days, we've had to take our buffaloes to the 19/5 reservoir to drink water. The public well in Dong Hoi 2 hamlet has run dry due to excessive use, so we have to go to the end of the Song Sao canal to collect water."

We noticed that she used water very sparingly; instead of throwing away the water used to rinse rice, she used it to wash vegetables and finally to wash her hands and feet. Ms. Tuat added: "The water from the Sao River canal has to be filtered before it can be used for cooking, and for bathing and other daily activities, we have to go to the 19/5 reservoir."

Mr. Tran Ngoc Phuc, head of Dong Hoi 2 hamlet, added: "The hamlet has 144 households, most of whom are severely lacking in clean water. Dong Hoi has more than 20 wells, all of which have dried up. Recently, the villagers dug 11 more wells, but the water level is very low. Over 30% of households use empty rainwater storage tanks, but because the tanks are small, most of them have run dry. To cope with the water shortage, the villagers mainly have to fetch water from the Song Sao canal and the Cau Mang stream."



The People's Committee of Nghia Hoi commune allocated 60 million VND to dig a water reservoir to serve Dong Hoi 1 and Dong Hoi 2 hamlets.



The 19/5 reservoir has been at a "dead" water level for the past month.

Mr. Le Van Ngoc, Vice Chairman of the Nghia Hoi Commune People's Committee, said: Nghia Hoi commune has over 700 households facing severe water shortages, especially in Dong Hoi I and Dong Hoi II hamlets. Faced with this situation, the Commune People's Committee has allocated budget funds along with contributions from residents to dig water reservoirs for the two hamlets, with a capacity of over 3000 cubic meters of water, sourced from the 19/5 reservoir. The total estimated cost is approximately 120 million VND, including 60 million VND for digging the reservoir and 60 million VND for pumping water to fill it. This water will be stored for residents' daily use and for poultry and livestock. However, this is only a temporary measure because when the water in the 19/5 reservoir runs dry, there is no way to obtain water for residents to use.
