Attending on behalf of the Australian Embassy were Mr. David Edwards, First Secretary, Protecting Integrity in Migration; Jobst Kohler, Director of the Development Programme of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Vietnam; and representatives from the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and the Border Guard Command.

The Communication Campaign is one of a series of activities in the communication campaign against illegal migration to Australia, jointly implemented by the Provincial Border Guard Command and the IOM since 2014. Through methods such as direct consultations, watching short plays, answering questions, and showing films, people have gained a realistic understanding of illegal migration from Vietnam to Australia. At the same time, it aims to provide people with information about Australian entry regulations and the actual consequences for those who illegally migrate to Australia by sea.

"If someone says they can arrange for you to come to Australia without a visa, they are lying to you. This is a game where there are never winners," said David Edwards, First Secretary, Integrity Protection in Immigration, Australian Embassy.

This program is part of the Australian Government's Border Protection campaign. Its aim is to prevent illegal entry of vessels into Australian territorial waters, deter migrants from risking their lives at sea, and uphold the integrity of the Australian government's immigration program. Statistics show that since 2012, over 1,400 people who illegally entered Australia have been detected and repatriated to Vietnam by authorities. Nghe An province has the highest number of illegal migrants to Australia nationwide (accounting for nearly 90% of those assisted in returning home).

The information session was an opportunity for people to gain an accurate understanding of illegal migration to Australia.

Over a five-year period (2010-2015), authorities in Nghe An province prosecuted, investigated, and tried 42 out of 83 defendants, including 6 cases involving 10 defendants who organized the illegal emigration of over 70 citizens to Australia. In addition, in coordination with the police forces of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province and Ho Chi Minh City, they investigated and handled dozens of other cases involving the illegal emigration of nearly 300 people to Australia.
