With its strengths in basic scientific research, research groups bearing the distinctive character of Vinh University have been operating effectively and are highly regarded by researchers in the same field both domestically and internationally. Some notable research groups include: the Optics - Spectroscopy research group initiated and led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Xuan Khoa; the Probability and Mathematical Statistics research group of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Quang; the Topology Theory research group of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van An...; the Linguistics research group of the Faculty of Literature Education... In addition, research groups of some young lecturers have initially been formed and are actively operating: the research group of Dr. Kieu Phuong Chi, Dr. Nguyen Huy Chieu, Dr. Nguyen Van Duc (Faculty of Mathematics); the nanotechnology research group of Dr. Nguyen Thi Quynh Hoa (Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications); the Agriculture - Forestry - Fisheries research group of Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh and M.Sc.

Nguyen Dinh Vinh (Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries); the research group on natural compounds led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Thang, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoa Du (Faculty of Chemistry)... These promising young scientific staff members have been discovered and nurtured: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Tien Hung (Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications), Dr. Nguyen Huy Bang (Faculty of Physics and Technology), Dr. Le Van Thanh (Faculty of Mathematics Education). To date, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Thang and Dr. Le Van Thanh are two of the university's young staff members with over 20 publications in prestigious international scientific journals, including over 15 in the ISI database. Alongside basic scientific research, they have also found their own unique paths in social sciences and humanities research. Many research works by faculty and lecturers in this field have left a mark on the domestic academic community, making practical contributions to serving the economic, cultural, and social development of the North Central region in general and Nghe An province in particular: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Nha Ban with research works on the Thanh-Nghe Tinh language; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuc with research on the history of the localities; Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong with research works on social welfare...

In addition, the university organizes many other scientific events annually, such as: editing and publishing scientific journals; organizing scientific conferences and seminars; and conducting scientific research activities for postgraduate students, graduate students, and undergraduates. The university's scientific journal is published four times a year, with rich and diverse content and format, and the quality of articles is constantly improving. It serves as a regular publication for exchange with universities and research institutes nationwide. In 2011, Vinh University Publishing House was established and has since published 42 books, including 15 textbooks with 25,000 copies printed, the rest being monographs, scientific proceedings, and literary and artistic books. The university always encourages and rewards staff members who publish research results in reputable international scientific journals. In 2013 alone, faculty and staff of the university published hundreds of articles and research papers in domestic and international scientific journals, including 58 articles in foreign journals. According to Associate Professor Tran Van An, Head of the Science and Equipment Management Department, "In recent years, the number of research topics published in international journals by the university has increased significantly, consistently ranking among the top 10 universities in Vietnam."

Currently, Vinh University has scientific research cooperation relationships with many higher education institutions, research institutes, and scientific organizations both domestically and internationally. The University has signed research projects and cooperation agreements with several universities such as: the University of South Florida, San Jose State University, Ohio University, Kent State University (USA), Zielona Gora University (Poland), Rajabhat Mahasarakham University (Thailand), Yuanpei University (Taiwan), Pukyong University (Korea), Central Europe University (Slovakia), Jenderal Soedirman University (Indonesia)...
