Premier League agrees to close 'summer transfer window' early

September 8, 2017 08:25

Member clubs have just voted to close the "summer market" before the start of the new season.

In a midweek vote, 14 clubs voted in favour of ending the summer transfer window early. This is the minimum number of member clubs needed for the decision to pass. Five clubs voted against and one abstained.

Accordingly, starting from the 2018-2019 season, the summer transfer market in England will end at 5pm on Thursday, during the week of round one of the Premier League.

Renato Sanches, Alexis Sanchez, Coutinho and Chamberlain were four of the Premier League's biggest names in the final transfer window before the big shake-up.

This means that clubs will have to buy new players before the start of the season. While the tradition continues until the summer of 2017, clubs can still buy players until August 31, which means that the first two or three rounds of the season have been played.

The reason for this change is the complaint of many coaches, who believe that being able to buy more players when the season has already started will cause distraction in preparation and competition.

"It's important to stop signing players before the season starts," manager Arsene Wenger once said. "Because if you don't, players don't have clarity. They don't know if they'll be sent to another team right after a match."

English clubs are only restricted from signing players after the deadline, but can still sell players until August 31, in line with the summer transfer window restrictions in other European leagues.

The English transfer window closes earlier than other leagues, so players are expected to focus more on playing, instead of worrying about the future when the season is already over.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has suggested other European leagues should also make changes, similar to the Premier League.

Giuseppe Marotta, CEO of Juventus, supported the new decision of the Premier League and called on Serie A to follow suit.

"The Premier League's decision was wise," said Marotta. "A prolonged transfer window only causes chaos. Now other European leagues should seriously discuss change."
