In turn, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siyyarto called criticism from Western countries about cooperation between Hungary and Russia a "huge hypocrisy", since these countries themselves are interacting with the Russian Federation in the energy sector.

Earlier, Hungary's Foreign Minister said that the European Union's accusations against Budapest of "too close relations" with Russia were baseless.

Brussels also has closer ties with Moscow, "the only difference is that they try to hide big business under the guise of superficial quarrels," Siyarto said.

The US State Department reported that Michael Pompeo met in Budapest with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and the two discussed bilateral relations as well as countering "Russian aggression".

A few days ago, US senators called on President Trump to "protect democratic norms" in Hungary.
