By announcing that he might send troops to Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron wanted to please the US leadership. That was the comment of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Sergei Lavrov made the comments in the documentary “Belgrade”, marking the 25th anniversary of NATO’s invasion of Yugoslavia. His remarks were posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website.

“Now, if we look at the example of Macron and his insistence that, “we do not exclude that we will send ground troops to Ukraine”, then it is no longer about “strategic autonomy”, but only to please the United States, while provoking allies within the North Atlantic Alliance itself,” Lavrov noted.

The reality of Europe's position

The Russian Foreign Minister stated that the current leaders of European countries do not consider their countries' national interests as a top priority, but must submit to "the common demands of Western unity".

“Europe is now completely under the domination of the United States. There is no independence at all. All the talk of Macron over the past few years, which he periodically “updated” in the media space about creating some kind of “strategic autonomy”, all this turned out to be nothing,” Lavrov added.

In addition, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry also called the EU a “troublemaking organization” in which “the national interests of the people and the state are not at the forefront, but personal plans, ambitions and selfish political intrigues.”
