Russian and German Foreign Ministers discuss Syria issue

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier discussed the situation in Syria on August 9.

The Russian and German foreign ministers held a phone call to discuss the Syria issue.

During the phone call, the two foreign ministers stressed the need to continue full internal Syrian dialogue, as announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The ministers exchanged views on the development of the situation in Syria, international efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict in the country with an emphasis on resuming comprehensive negotiations between the government and the opposition within the framework of the Geneva political transition process, improving the effectiveness of the fight against terrorism and extremist organizations, and resolving humanitarian issues," the statement said.

The two foreign ministers also discussed "some aspects of the Russian-German agenda", including the schedule of upcoming bilateral contacts.
