Russian Foreign Minister: EU issues 'gas directive' to disrupt construction of 'Nord Stream-2'

"Amendments to the European Union gas directive were designed to prevent the completion of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the German newspaper Rheinische Post.

“In this context, we do not quite understand the persistent attempts of some forces to hinder the implementation of the project. This is how we think about the amendments to the European Union's "gas directive" that came into force on May 23. These amendments actually violate the basic principle of protecting investors from changes in the legislation of the host country of the project. We have no doubt that these amendments were designed solely to prevent the completion of construction,” Lavrov said.

At the same time, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that the construction of Nord Stream-2 is proceeding according to plan: about 60% of the total length of the gas pipeline has been laid, and the capital costs for its implementation are financed by more than 80%.
