British fishermen find Roman treasure worth $267,000

A fisherman discovered 600 Roman coins worth nearly $267,000 buried beneath a field in England.

Fisherman Mike Smale by chancediscovered a large amount of Roman coins dating back 2,000 years while searching for treasure with a group of friendson his fieldAnthony Butlerin Bridport town, Dorset county, England, Sun reported on September 29.

A metal detector helped Smale discover 600 coins buried beneath the ground."This is my greatest and most amazing discovery," Smale said.

It is estimated that some coins could sell for $1,200. Specimenswill be passed on to an appraiser and will likely be sold to a museum.The proceeds will be split between Butler and Smale.

From the photo of the coin, experts say the symbols of the gods suggest the coin likely dates from the Roman Republican period, centuries BC.

Several coins depicting Roman warships are believed to date from the period when Roman general Mark Anthony was allied with Queen Cleopatra of Egypt between the autumn of 32 BC and the spring of 31 BC.
