Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus. The disease usually appears in late winter and early spring, lasting into summer.
Chickenpox patients show signs of fatigue, loss of appetite, and fever 24-48 hours later. On the third day, a rash begins on the skin, initially red, sore spots, and after a few hours, blisters appear on the skin.
Blisters appear very quickly within 12 - 24 hours. Blisters are 1 - 3mm in size, containing clear fluid. In severe cases, the blisters will be larger or when infected with bacteria, the blisters will be cloudy due to containing pus.
The most common complication of the disease is skin infection that can lead to scarring. These scars are often depressed scars on the skin, causing aesthetic loss and often lasting for life.
Chickenpox is highly contagious in the community.
