A person who was wrongly accused for more than 40 years requests compensation of 12 billion VND
Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, Deputy Director of Hoa Loi Law Firm - authorized representative of Mr. Tran Van Them, who has been a death row inmate for more than 40 years, said he has sent a request for compensation for Mr. Them's wrongful conviction to the Supreme People's Court, the High People's Court in Hanoi and the State Compensation Department, Ministry of Justice.

Speaking to reporters of the Communist Party of Vietnam Online Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa said that the petition was sent to the authorities by post on the afternoon of August 12, in which the proposed compensation amount was about 12 billion VND. This amount includes mental damage for the days of wrongful imprisonment, actual damage during the days Mr. Tran Van Them (81 years old, Yen Phu, Yen Phong, Bac Ninh) had to spend in prison, mental damage for Mr. Them and his family, costs of appealing for justice, medical expenses, etc.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, the compensation for Mr. Them is calculated in 2 stages. Mr. Them was detained for 2,010 days (from July 23, 1970 to February 30, 1976 when he was released). Mr. Hoa requested compensation of more than 1.1 billion VND during this period, including mental damage and actual lost income.
From the time of release until the investigation was suspended, the defendant requested compensation of more than 10 billion VND.
In addition, about 800 million VND is for other expenses such as: costs of appeal, medical expenses for Mr. Them...
Previously, as reported, on the morning of August 11, the joint committee of the Central Judicial Agencies held a meeting to announce the decision to suspend the investigation of the accused and publicly apologize to Mr. Tran Van Them (80 years old, residing in Bac Ninh) - who has been a death row inmate for more than 40 years. Thus, after half a lifetime, Mr. Tran Van Them has been cleared of his name!
At the press conference right after the announcement of the decision and public apology to Mr. Them, referring to the responsibility of the individuals involved in causing Mr. Tran Van Them to be wrongly convicted, Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court Bui Ngoc Hoa said that this was a mistake of the prosecution agencies due to the delay in issuing the decision, therefore the responsibility belongs to the prosecution agencies./.
