Protesters call for arrest of former President Park Geun-hye

Critics have called for Park's arrest, a day after she was ousted over a corruption scandal involving major conglomerates.

"We demand the resignation of Ms. Park Geun-hye and Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn,"Reutersquoted Ms. Choi In-sook, spokeswoman for the protesters, said today.

Ms. Park was forced to resign yesterday after Constitutional Court judges upheld a parliamentary decision to impeach her for her role in a corruption scandal involving Ms. Park's friend, Choi Soon-sil.lost presidential immunity, facing possible prosecution.

Tens of thousands of people lit candles on the evening of March 10 to celebrate Ms. Park's impeachment.

The former president remained in her office at the Presidential Palace a day after the court's ruling. Aides and observers said she needed more time to come to terms with the abrupt decision.

"The former president is in shock and seems to need more time to process what just happened to her," an unnamed aide told Yonhap.

Ms Park is suspected of allowing Ms Choi, who held no government position, to interfere in domestic affairs and colluding with Ms Choi to extort money from big conglomerates like Samsung. Both have denied the charges.

A new presidential election will take place no later than May 19, the chairman of the election commission said today.
