52-year-old woman poisoned her lover's family
Already married with two children, but when she fell in love with a 63-year-old man and was treated coldly, Ms. Chien poisoned her lover's entire family.
On May 6, Hanoi People's Court brought defendant Nguyen Thi Chien (52 years old, residing in Chan Ky village, Trung Tu commune, Ung Hoa district, Hanoi) to trial for the crimes of Murder and Property Destruction.
The evil plan of the heartbroken man
With tears streaming down her face, the defendant stated: she and Mr. T. (63 years old, in Ung Hoa, Hanoi) had known each other since 2006. After a period of knowing each other, they developed feelings for each other and often made appointments at motels and hotels to "talk".
After the initial period of infatuation, Ms. Chien realized that Mr. T.'s feelings for her gradually cooled when she asked her lover out many times, but Mr. T. refused. Many times Ms. Chien called, but Mr. T. refused to pick up.

Thinking that her lover had changed his mind, Ms. Chien came up with the idea of poisoning Mr. T's family.
On the morning of July 24, 2015, Ms. Chien brought 2 packets of rat poison and 1 packet of snail poison to Mr. T's house. She sneaked into the back garden and hid there. When she saw Mr. T. go out, Ms. Chien took 2 packets of rat poison and poured them into the chicken feed bin, and took the snail poison and poured it into the water tank of her lover's house.
The next morning, Mr. T.'s flock of nearly 20 chickens died after eating rat poison mixed with bran. Mr. T.'s son used water from the tank to make tea and also suffered from stomachache, chest pain, and difficulty breathing, and had to be treated and rushed to Bach Mai Hospital.
Realizing the unusual incident, Mr. T's family reported it to the police. When the commune police arrived, they scooped water from Mr. T's tank and put toads and fish in. Both toads and fish died, so a report was made.
Repent
On July 28, 2015, Ms. Chien made an appointment to meet Mr. T. to talk and confessed that she put rat poison in the chicken feed and snail poison in Mr. T's family's drinking water tank.
After confessing, Ms. Chien begged her lover for forgiveness. Mr. T. secretly recorded the entire conversation. Finally, Ms. Chien had to surrender.
At the trial of Ms. Chien, Mr. T.’s wife said that Ms. Chien had repeatedly damaged her family’s property. The victim’s family asked the defendant to pay 10 million VND in compensation.
Hearing this, defendant Chien begged: "I beg the victim's family, my family's circumstances, to only ask for compensation of 6 million VND." After discussing with his wife, Mr. T. accepted the above compensation.
Tears streaming down her face throughout the trial, Ms. Chien stated: "Because the defendant lacks legal knowledge, she caused the incident. The defendant is very remorseful and asks the panel of judges to forgive her so that she can soon return to her husband and children."
According to the People's Procuracy, Ms. Chien's actions constituted the crimes of Murder and Property Destruction. Although the fatal consequences have not yet occurred, the defendant's methods are very likely to cause the deaths of many people.
The defendant's defense attorney argued that the prosecution should reconsider the charge of murder because the Institute of Criminal Science has proven that there is no document showing that the substance niclosamide in the snail killer causes death...
Mr. T. and his son both affirmed that the defendant's intention was to kill many people. And if Ms. Chien did not intend to kill people, then right after putting the snail poison in the tank, she would have called to inform them.
Faced with the indignant attitude of Mr. T. and his son, the defendant sobbed, turned to the victim, clasped his hands and begged for forgiveness.
With the assessment that the defendant's tricks were dangerous, the panel sentenced Ms. Chien to 12 years in prison for two crimes: Murder and Property Destruction.
